Kickin' It With Corruption: International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Congress, 2021

The FIFA World Cup was set to occur in 2022, but the year prior would pose a threat to FIFA’s integrity. The uncovering of human rights abuses in Qatar and questions about the legitimacy of Qatar’s bid to host the World Cup all the way back in 2010 put into question the transparency of the FIFA organization. Now, with a potential new league being discussed as a challenger to the UEFA Premier League, a FIFA-affiliated regional championship, growing dissent is forming to FIFA’s hold on the football world. The FIFA Council, a decision-making body that meets outside of the FIFA Congress, will be the body most responsible for passing statutes and making organizational decisions that affect how FIFA responds to this ongoing problem. Each delegate of the 2021 FIFA Council, made up of the FIFA President, various leaders of the six regions within FIFA, and members of football associations, must pass directives in response to the developing situation, and ultimately show the public that FIFA is here to stay. However, every leader in this council can pass their own individual notes to advance their own goals, whether positive or detrimental to the overall cause. Will you work together to score the public’s trust, or kick it with corruption once again?
This Committee operates with General Assembly procedure.

Tracy Mussotte

Tracy is a FIU sophomore, majoring in Physics and Philosophy with a minor in Mathematical Sciences. She grew up fond of the arts and science but also having an urge to advocate on others behalves. Which is what drew her to MUN as from a young age she saw the need to speak up for those who could not. Alongside being raised in South Florida by Haitian parents Tracy chose FIU to stay around a diverse community environment that she was used to growing up. At FIU she wants to learn how and why the universe around us works, because it’s important to first understand than to be understood. Outside of all the analytical, Tracy has grown fond of creative works through music and film and constantly working on new projects to express herself and help others.

Cayetana Velasco

Cayetana Velasco is a first-year international student from Lima, Peru, currently majoring in Political Science at FIU with aspirations of becoming a lawyer. Her Model U.N journey began in 2020 during an online conference, and since then, she has never looked back. Over the years, she has been a part of the Secretariat at her school and participated in over ten local and international conferences. Her passion for debate is reflected through her interest in humanitarian, social, and economic issues, especially at the intersection of politics and economics. Joining the FIU Model UN team this year has definitely been an exciting new opportunity for Cayetana. When she’s not immersed in MUN, you’ll probably find her either binge-watching Gilmore Girls for the hundredth time, reading a book, or switching between her three fave music genres: reggaeton, house music, and obviously Taylor Swift.
