BACKGROUND GUIDE

Topic Summary

It’s the Summer of ’67 aka the Summer of Love here in San Francisco, California!  With the counterculture movement in full swing, over 100,000 people are set to converge here, specifically at the Haight-Ashbury district, to preach their scripture of peace and love.  But the flowers most commonly associated with the movement were more than a commodity to be put on merch; they represented the counterculture’s resistance to the conservatism of decades’ past as well as the government’s infringement on their civil liberties and freedom. Disillusioned from the government’s policies regarding the war, the youth felt the urgency to speak up in order to end the cycle of suffering and to plant the seeds of a more peaceful, harmonious world.

As the country grows overdue for monumental change, delegates will assume the roles of influential figures during this time such as activists, musicians, journalists, and government officials as they join together to navigate these rising tensions of both domestic and foreign policy.  Despite this, the country’s eyes will soon be on San Francisco as the mass migration of hippies are just on the horizon.  In the fight for peace and love, will you give America her flowers?  Or will you throw dirt on her for the next generations to plant the seeds of change?
