BACKGROUND GUIDE
Topic Summary
To predict the future. A concept as old as humanity itself, one that could only exist in fiction. Yet, what if this wasn’t the case anymore?
The year is 2112, where the former northwestern United States succumbed due to environmental disasters and resource scarcity, now lay the Federal Counciliate of Algol, which claims to have created a framework for the perfect society: future prediction. Inspired by the doctrine of Laplace’s Demon, the ruling Council claim to possess an universal knowledge which allows for future events to be calculated, and through technological advances, the thoughts and behaviors of every citizen can be factored into the equations, effectively allowing the state to anticipate everything for its citizens; from careers, to illnesses, to crime and dissent. Despite the fact that most of their citizens find this model of government almost utopian, for others it has become a sentence for a life that they have no choice but to commit.
Within committee, you will assume the identity of an official summoned to an emergency digital assembly of the Dissonance Assessment and Regulation Taskforce (DART). Or will you? As it turns out, this assembly has been breached by dissenting factions through the impersonation of officials, and you could be one of them as well. Operating in codenames, you will interrogate one another, respond to developing crises, all while striving to maintain your own identity secret. Whatever ensues, it will be in the delegates’ hands to decide whether Algol’s future is truly foreordained, and whether the end can really justify the means if the latter brings a greater good?
Your call, or is it? Now that you’ve been briefed, welcome to the 22nd century.
This committee will require delegates to write crisis notes intermittently throughout the conference weekend.
