BACKGROUND GUIDE
Topic Summary
It is the year 1983, and the military junta is coming to an end. Since 1976, Argentina has been in the hands of the repressive and ruthless military dictatorship led by Lieutenant General Jorge Rafael Videla. After years of countless crimes against humanity and the devastating loss of the Malvinas War, the social climate changed completely. The Argentine people’s pressure and ceaseless resistance against its authoritarian government led its highest officials to resign their power, give way to civil government, and initiate the process of democratic restoration. Now, the people have chosen Raul Alfonsin, the leader of the Radical Civic Union, in the first democratic elections after the dictatorship.
Delegates will be tasked to navigate the complex tasks of directing a free country after the darkest period of the country’s history. They must collaborate and find common goals in an era where diverse ideologies clash in the pursuit of restoring democracy under the Argentine sun.
The future of Argentina depends on you, and it is not a one-person responsibility.
*This committee is a bilingual-Spanish speaking committee. It is recommended for delegates with strong writing and speaking skills in both English and Spanish*
