BACKGROUND GUIDE

Topic Summary

Benvenuti patrioti, monarchi, rivoluzionari…e a tutti quelli che sperano che l’Italia rimanga divisa.

Welcome to 1859! The Italian peninsula remains fractured by regional divides, split between rival kingdoms, duchies, the Papal States, and the Austrian Empire. Calls for unity grow throughout the peninsula, old governments fight to keep their grip on power, and Italy’s competing visions of the future collide. In this historical Specialized General Assembly, delegates will assume the roles of the politicians, monarchs, generals, revolutionaries, clergy, and other historical figures who found themselves at the forefront of Italian Unification.

As committee progresses from 1859 to 1861 you will debate legislation, negotiate and break alliances, manage your region’s unique interests, and respond to an ever-changing political landscape through diplomacy, collaboration, and decisive leadership. Actions you take one year may have consequences that reach into the next, as the ever shifting balance of power across the peninsula forces delegates to adapt to a changing political landscape. Whether your ambitions call for a united Italy under one crown, or maintaining the status quo by any means necessary, every decision made will impact the future of the peninsula. Italy’s future has not yet been decided, and the question is no longer if it will change, but how.

This committee will require delegates to write crisis notes intermittently throughout the conference weekend.
