Topic Summary

The year is 1900. A crushing government victory has decimated the liberal rebel forces led by Colonel Aureliano Buendía in the andean region. Still, the war is far from over. The Caribbean region remains in rebel hands, Venezuela is threatening to intervene in their favor, and the United States is protecting the isthmus from the destruction of war by watching closely.

Meanwhile, Vice-President José Manuel Marroquín took over the presidency after attempting a coup d’etat by allying with the Liberal elites. This alliance, however, did not end the war. He has stuck to his mission to restore conservative hegemony in the region, negotiate with foreign powers, and find a way to make Colombia great… or at least make it profitable again! In the process though, he has angered the liberal party and the rebels.

To solve this crisis once and for all, he created a special cabinet with generals, politicians, ministers and businessmen to find out if the best solution would be negotiating peace or crushing the enemies.

However, remember that in this Colombia, people can live for hundreds of years, the dead talk with the living, dreams become reality, and even yellow flowers occasionally rain from the sky. Delegates will have to fight through both the political implications of this crisis and the unpredictability of a country where magic and logic sometimes mix, but reality always prevails. Now, whether they save the fatherland or make it worse for their own gain is entirely…up to them.

This is a standard crisis committee.

Crisis Director: Jacobo Mosseri

Jacobo is a second-year honors college student at FIU majoring in Political Science and Economics. He was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, and moved to the United States four years ago. Since then, he led the Italian club at his high-school and participated in a local government program with his city’s commission. Jacobo joined FIU Model UN team in 2024 as he started his college career and traveled with the team to the third iteration of SUNMUN.

He is passionate about Colombian history and loves to talk about it, especially when the Thousand Days War is mentioned. When it’s time to clear his mind , he plays the piano, paints, and plays tennis. He expects the best when it is time to see you all in the upcoming FIMUN!

Director: Matias Saez

Matias Saez is a first-year FIU student majoring in Economics. He was born in Miami, Florida, and has lived here all his life. Matias, in high school, was a part of SGA, Choir, and helped to establish many clubs like the Thespian Honor Society. Academically, he has always loved economics and finance, as he loves to read books about the history of economic policy. Outside of academics, Matias loves to spend his time watching musicals and singing some of his favorite musicals, such as She Loves Me and West Side Story.

Chair: Laura Morato Martin

Laura is a first-year FIU student majoring in International Relations and Political Science. She was born in Madrid, Spain but has lived in Florida for most of her life. Yet don’t be fooled as she could easily eat a whole “tortilla de patatas” in 5 minutes. In high school, she was involved in the Feminism and ASL Club while also serving as a policy fellow for the Mayor of Broward County. There, she learned that words are the bridge to solving conflicts and, therefore, loves to yap. If you get her to talk about musicals, airplanes, her love for Publix, or any of her niche interests she will probably never stop.

As Chair, Laura is excited to welcome everyone to the sunshine state and is eager to see the imaginative minds of delegates at FIMUN!
