The UN Office of Legal Affairs provides legal advice to the United Nations and its member states across a variety of issues, encouraging the development, harmonization, and codification of international law. In this committee, delegates will take on the roles of legal consultants as they work to investigate and advance the concept of international legal personality. In the first half of the debate, they will deliberate on the rights and responsibilities given to various entities such as corporations, the environment, and artificial intelligence systems, ultimately synthesizing their work into a treaty to guide the committee moving forward. In the second half, they will be given a case to litigate, using their newly created treaty as a baseline to present and judge arguments on both sides. Through this process, delegates will have the opportunity to take on a variety of roles as they contribute to the evolution of legal standards in an increasingly complex world.
This Committee operates under special procedure that will be elaborated within the Background Guide.
There are no Position Papers required for this committee.
